For as long as I can remember, we’ve had sparrows living in a hole in the eave above one of the kitchen windows, the one by the backdoor. This has never caused any of us any concern and in recent years, we actually look forward to the building of the spring nest and the babies that end up coming along with it (just like humans, those little tykes are NOISY when they’re hungry).

However, this spring, our sparrows George and Weezy (yes, I named them, shut up; if they’re going to live here, then I’m going to call them whatever I want), have been joined by a pair of young doves that have decided to build a nest in the garage.

And when I say in the garage, I don’t mean in the eaves or the gutters of the garage, or up in the rafters where we store all sorts of goodies. Nope. they’ve decided to build their nest on top of a tall, metal cabinet. It’s high and difficult for predators to get to, sure, but it’s sort of right where the action is.

At one point we thought that Archie and Edith (are you getting the naming theme here?) had abandoned the nest because we went a couple of days without seeing them in it, but they’re back and we’ve been seeing them quite a lot lately.

I have no idea how this is going to work out for them. We’re in and out of that garage often during the day. The door gets put up in the mornings, pretty early when  I have kid minding duty, and we’ve been mindful about putting it down very late in the evening when the birds should already be in bed for the night. But Archie is skittish. Sometimes, he’ll do okay when you walk into the garage. Sometimes he panics and flies for his life and Edith looks at him like he’s a moron.

Not so different from George and Weezy, really. George can’t fly into the eaves if anyone, be it person or cat, is nearby. He sits and bitches about you being there. Meanwhile, Weezy will buzz your head if you’re in her way. She can’t wait for you to move. She’s got shit to do.

I can relate.

We’ll see how my birdie families do this summer. I’m hoping well. I’d like some baby pictures.
